All Eyes on DJ THEakasha

How did you get into being a Disc Jockey?
Both of my parents are musicheads so I’ve always been a musichead and I’ve always been kinda curious about DJing. It wasn’t until I got to college at Temple University that I had the opportunity to befriend a couple of DJs, be in classes with DJs, get to see what they do up close and get to pick their brain about it.

If you could choose one song to describe your personality; what song would it be?
Ooooh, that’s such a hard one. I need a few months to think about this question, let’s come back to it.

If you could steal credit for any great piece of art, song, film, book etc which one would you claim?
Eh, I don’t believe in stealing buuuut it would be cool to own the patent for something common like the doorknob or the toilet bowl. Royalties for daysssss!
If you were a box of cereal, what would you be and why?
I would be Fruity Pebbles! I just feel like the way Fruity Pebbles looks is how my personality feels to most people, haha.

What does “Spiritual Chia Pet” mean to you?
It means I’m constantly growing and watering myself from the inside out.

What would you do if you found a penguin in the freezer?
I’d call animal control, haha.

You are visual artist and DJ genius to your crowd. What preparations do you make before your set?
I sit in silence most of the day, I meditate on how I want the night to go and the type of crowd I want to show up. I look at stimulating images, sometimes I’ll pick out a few tracks I want to put in rotation for the night, and I always try to make sure I’m fed and hydrated before a set.

What 2017 accomplishments are you most proud of? (Could be personal growth or career growth..or both)
Super proud of my personal growth emotionally, it’s been a wild ride! But career-wise, I’m proud of myself for finally starting to find and build my team, for making it to A3C Festival and Art Basel stages, and also really proud of me for bossing up this year and solidifying my brand more.

The New Year is right around the corner. What are your career plans for, The New Year, 2018?
A couple of things on my professional 2018 bucket list include: Performing at SXSW, performing at Fashion Week, performing internationally or on an island, and releasing a visual album!
